One of the great photographic finds of the past decade or more was John Maloof’s purchase of a bunch of photo negatives at a garage sale in Chicago back in 2007. Little did he know that he had accidentally stumbled upon the work of Vivian Maier, one of the great unknown street photographers, who had been a nanny most of her adult life. Had he now purchased these negatives or tracked down the remaining boxes at a storage company trash bin, all of Maier’s photos would have been lost forever. Here is Maloof’s story.
