When Towns Are Turned Into Lakes

Over 30 years ago, the town of Geamana in Romania was abandoned and filled up with water to service the copper mine Roşia Poieni. It is not the only city or town to be abandoned in the service of industrialization, but the pictures to go with it can be depressing. I can’t imagine my home town being permanently submerged under water, or to see it dried up decades later in a drought.

A very cool gallery of photos that blends in the present day with that of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Central America’s Largest Garbage Dump

A photograph like this really does put life into perspective. It’s also so hard to see people living like this.

“Big Appetites” – Big Food, Little People

Here is a wonderful little gallery of photos of food with very little toy people included. Hey, if you got the time on your hands, use it wisely. And this is an example of it well spent.

Atari’s ASCII Art Photo Booth

I love looking at ads from by gone days, especially the 1970s. But combine that with a gigantic machine that creates ASCII art, even better.

116 Hollywood Stars in One Group Picture

Here are 116 Hollywood stars in one large group shot. I love that Meryl Streep is at the very center. I bet those who weren’t invited are calling their agents about now.

Inside the New York Times “Lively Morgue”

I’ve always thought that dumping letters and photos into a shoebox is a much better way to preserve your past than entrusting it to a hard drive(s). Anyone who tries to get rid of a photo and document archive is an idiot.

Lennart Nilsson’s 1969 Photos Of ‘In Vivo Human Embryos’

In light of my wife giving birth to our first child this week, a daughter, I thought it appropriate to share a really incredible book of photography of ‘in vivo human embryos’ by the Swedish photography Lennart Nilsson. The photographs and book were released in 1969, a time when it was believed impossible to take such photographs. The pictures are absolutely stunning even today, 43 years later.
